Wal-Mart reaches settlement with OSHA for cleaning processesLeading retail giant, Wal-Mart has said that it has reached a settlement with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which is a part of the Labor Department, for improving conditions related to trash compactors and cleaning chemicals in all of the company's more than 2,800 outlets in the US.

The United States Department of Labor announced on Wednesday that the retailer has agreed to settlement that includes payment of a fine of $190,000 and improvement of conditions. The Labor Department had accused the retailer of putting its workers at risk following violations found at a Walmart store in Rochester in 2011. The settlement covers all of 2,857 Walmart and Sam's Club stores in the 28 states where OSHA enforces safety and health practices.

The retailer will now ensure that its trash compactors remain locked when not in use and cannot be operated without the supervision of a trained manager or monitor. The company also said that it will improve training of workers using cleaning chemicals and will change procedures so that workers do not handle undiluted chemicals for cleaning purposes.

Randy Hargrove, a Wal-Mart spokesman said, "When we learned of the concerns raised by OSHA at our Rochester store in 2011, we immediately addressed them and reinforced the company's guidelines."
