m777-155mm-howitzerWashington, Aug. 9: the United States is offering to sell India 145 M777 155 mm light-weight towed howitzers in a deal 885 million dollars to add a powerful kick in the India army.


The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress Aug. 2 possible foreign military sale to India howitzers with laser inertial artillery pointing system (LINAPS) and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $885 million.


"India intends to use the howitzers to modernise its armed forces and enhance its ability to work in dangerous conditions. India will have no difficulty absorbing these weapons into its armed forces, said the mandatory notification.


The proposed sale of India's request "would contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States of America, helping to strengthen the United States-India strategic relations and improve the security of an important partner, which continues to be for political stability, peace and economic progress in South Asia," said the notice.


Proposed sale of equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region, said the notice. There will be no adverse impact on the United States Defense readiness as a result of the proposed sale, he said.


According to Indian defense procurement procedure (DPP), it is expected that the provider will need to compensate for a contract with the Government of India, the notice said,


The deal would include safeguards, spare and repair parts, support and test equipment, publications and technical documentation, maintenance, training and training equipment, the United States Government and contractor technical assistance, equipment and logistics support staff, and other related elements of logistics support.

M777 howitzer is a towed 155 mm artillery howitzer M198, the successor in the Marine Corps and United States Army. M777 also used the land forces of Canada and Australia. It made its combat debut in the war in Afghanistan.
