NGT permits Sterlite plant to continue operationsNational Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday allowed Sterlite industries based on Tuticorin smelter to continue operations.

Tamil Nadu pollution control (SBZT) hit the smelting plant closing notice with 29 May following reports of sulphur dioxide (SO2) gas leaks from the factory in May.

But, NGT bench headed by Justice Swatanter Kumar cancelled the State of contamination of remote closure notice, stating that it was arbitrary.

In its ruling, the NGT bench said, "it's not a matter of promoting development at the expense of the environment. The procedure suffers from the Vice of arbitrariness and not sustainable. "

The State Pollution Control Board ordered the closure of the plant after complaints that the SO2 gas leak on 23 May 23 caused serious diseases among residents of the town of Tuticorin, which is almost eight kilometers from the factory.

Sterlite had welcomed the decision of NGT and said that it will implement all the recommendations made by the Committee of experts designated by the NGT on time. He added that he would take all measures to ensure maximum environmental standards in its operations.
